Located on the outskirts of Sarchi, these stunning gardens showcase more than 2000 species of botanicals and tropical plants. Visitors can meander nearly two miles of beautifully landscaped trails, which feature orchids, cacti, bromeliads, palms, succulents, heliconia and hibiscus, each labeled with their common and scientific names.
read more closeIn addition to a dazzling array of plants, the Else Kientzler Botanical Garden has several gazebos, picnic areas and lookout points on the grounds. A whimsical topiary maze is sure to please kids – and children at heart. Jungle gyms, water games and a kid-only zip line tour make this attraction very family-friendly.
Else Kientzler Botanical Garden strives to be a leader in natural resources conservation and protection, and tours of the garden emphasize the importance of environmentalism. Guided walks are available in English, Spanish and German, and advance reservations are recommended. Almost half of the botanical garden is wheelchair accessible and guests may also opt for self-guided tours.
Getting There:
Bus: From San Jose, buses leave at 12:15 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:10 p.m. Buses depart from the intersection of Calle 18 and Avenidas 5/7 and drop off in downtown Sarchi. ($1.80, 90 minutes) 2258-2004.
Car: From San Jose, take Highway 1 west toward Puntarenas. At the turnoff to Naranjo, follow signs to Sarchi. The garden is located four blocks north of the Sarchi stadium, within the grounds of Innovaplant ornamental plant exporter.
