Kardoes Restaurant
When Robinson Crusoe shipwrecked onto a deserted island, he probably didn't find Dutch pancakes with Gouda cheese, piña coladas, french fries, or an adorable Jack Russell Terrier like you'll discover at the castaway-inspired Kardoes Restaurant in Cabuya.
read more closeDutch Owner Marco Edelenbos' terrier, Kardoes always runs around the funky restaurant, entertaining eaters as they pander breakfast buffet, $10, seasonal fruit, gallo pinto (mixed rice and beans), scrambled or fried eggs, mini Dutch pancakes, cereal, yogurt, coffee and tea. It's highly unlikely you'll miss Kardoes' cute doggy antics in the morning, and of course, she'll be there again at lunchtime.
Watch out for Kardoes' puppy dog eyes begging for a bite of your afternoon snack, a Deluxe Dutch pancake, $10, with ham, bacon, gouda cheese, mushrooms, tomato, onion. You could sneak the pup a bit of your refreshing piña colada, $7, but we recommend you keep it all to yourself – and pair it with a juicy cheeseburger, $9, and a side of french fries sprinkled with paprika.
Then, at dinner, the human/pet roles will reverse. You'll be begging like Kardoes does when you see the restaurant's tantalizing three-course meals, $20:
Delicias del Oceano, including a mixed salad with balsamic vinaigrette, steamed swordfish in white wine cream sauce with a side of french fries, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled in chocolate sauce
Celaje, featuring mixed salad with chunked gouda cheese, fire-grilled steak in black pepper sauce, french fries on the side, and a banana-chocolate Dutch pancake, $6.
Ambiance
Kardoes Restaurant is without a doubt Cabuya's most outlandishly decorated spot, featuring crimson curtains, heliconia flowers and ferns, stick-and-seashell trinkets, shipwrecked timber chandeliers, animal remains and human skulls. From the low-rise artisan leather chairs, you can see the hotel's pool and volcanic rock on Playa Cabuya.
Service
Kardoes is the restaurant's lead staff member, and she's no good when it comes to delivering food. Marco is a self-proclaimed pirate — so that makes for some good adventure, too.
